New York City is a place of contrasts: fragile wood
and massive steel, warehouses and skyscrapers, intimacy
and monumentality.
Albert Gehret and Anja Kleemann-Jacks make this
polarity visible by juxtaposing different artistic
approaches. This creates a dialogue that allows the
city’s essence to be experienced in a new way.
In his photo-based works, Albert Gehret explores
how perception is shaped by image-making processes.
His photographs originate in real urban spaces—
digitally transformed, folded, and layered—thereby
leading the viewer beyond the city’s visible surface.
The seemingly familiar transforms into a shifting
perception: a second reality poised between
documentation and construction.
Anja Kleemann-Jacks, meanwhile, turns her gaze
to the city’s iconic rooftop water tanks in her series
NY Rooftop Watertanks. In her work, these
unassuming utility structures are transformed into
silent protagonists suspended between sky and
architecture—fragile witnesses to a living urban
organism. Through the use of painting, collage,
and mixed media, the artist breathes new life into
these monuments, paying them the tribute they
deserve.
Together, they create a multi-layered interplay
between perception and symbolism, allowing New
York to be experienced not merely as a place, but
as a pulsating web of contrasts—a city that never
sleeps.
