Reality in the Mirror of Perception

Albert Gehret and Mike van der Gracht present photographic and photo-based works that render people visible in different ways.

Mike van der Gracht photographs people face to face. For him, portrait photography is an integrative process in which social, biological, psychological and spiritual aspects merge. He sees his work as the art of capturing the right moment, in the right place, from the right perspective, at precisely the right fraction of a second—thereby revealing the beauty inherent in every human being.

Albert Gehret works in the field of photo-based art. His works question the supposed unambiguity of photographic reality: people appear not only as figures, but also as traces, movements, interventions or temporal condensations. This reveals that an image shows not only what was in front of the camera, but also how we read and organise reality. Between portrait and trace, encounter and echo, a dialogue emerges about human presence in the image—and about the extent to which perception shapes what is visible.

The introduction at the opening will be given by Prof. Dr Irene Daum, psychologist, neuroscientist and art writer. Her work focuses on perception, memory and creativity, as well as the connections between science and art.

The Kunstverein’s exhibitions are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 to 6 pm.
The Kunstverein is also open on Mondays from 7 pm.
